Hey Gang, Just a quick word as the week of my nuptials bears down on me. We get married this weekend in Encino, and lots of friends and family are flying in, so I'm about to do a nice disappearing act for all of those not in the flesh for the next few days. Before I do, here's a quick look at what's going on.

First off, on the wedding kick, we made a comic book as a hand out for our guests, and got an amazing bunch of guys to contribute. Elk's Run's Noel Tuazon did an amazing job on the bulk of the pages, with a quick section of my Postcards collaborator Micah Farritor's work, and good friend Tony Fleecs put the thing together. Add to that it's wrapped in the above beautiful cover by Phil Hester. Keep checking the blog, as we're doing a giveaway of a few copies of this extremely limited comic. It's like if Elk's Run wasn't a miserable adventure in death and family.

Next up, over at Newsarama.com, John Siuntres's Word Balloon podcast has been posted, and it's the first of two parts of the Library Panel with myself, Mark Waid, Kazu Kibuishi, Christos Gage, Ross Richie, and Tony Fleecs. The panel was great, and relistening to it makes me feel pretty confident that it was a worthwhile endeavor for all involved. Special thanks to Dan Dupill from the LAPL for helping to set the whole thing up. Here's the full story.

Also, this week in stores, from IDW Gene Simmons House of Horrors #2 featuring a story by me drawn by the inimitable Andy Kuhn. I saw his original pages back at Comic Con, and they were absolutely amazing. Do yourself (and us) a favor and pick up a copy.

Finally, in somewhat bizarre news, a movie I wrote is actually on its way from Mark's and my pens (through some unknown Canadian rewrite guys) to the small screen. The movie's gone from being called They're Among Us to The Hatching (which I mistook for The Hutching, assuming it had something to do with vertical storage) and seems to possibly have at least something to do with what Mark and I originally wrote so many months ago. Best of all, it stars Isabella Rossellini and Judd Nelson. (I hope there's a walking away/fist pump/freeze frame at the end, but I doubt I'm that lucky.) God knows how the thing'll turn out, but, at the very least, I'm proud to cause each of you pain on a Saturday night in the near future. Here's the PR on the movie.

That'll do it for me. Thanks for reading, and see y'all in a week or two. Keep checking the blog and the Twitter if you'd like to watch my descent into insanity during my final week of pre-marital bliss.

Cheers,

j.

Where oh Where…

I'm getting married in a week and a half.  We just got back from San Jose, and haven't stopped doing wedding stuff throughout.  Meanwhile, we got some incredible news about PUNKS, that requires me to pause all of my other work and crank out some scripts.  Should be announcing that shortly.  I'm also hammering away on this creator owned manga I'm doing with Seven Seas. In other words, I'm really busy.

Sorry for the disappearing act.

PUNKS: THE COMIC – Summer Special #1

Punks: The Comic – Summer Special #1 finally lands after several months of anticipation, an early recommendation by Warren Ellis, and much praise lavished on Kody Chamberlain’s unique collage art. It tells a loosely constructed story of four roommates – Fist, Skull, Abe, and Dog – who thwart an alien invasion in between fighting amongst themselves. Chamberlain depicts the entire story in collage, with a stark visual style influenced by punk rock fliers and album covers. Joshua Fialkov’s story crackles with sight gags and absurdist humor.

Punks the Comic Christacular Special Digital Webbing: Dan: The Punks Summer Special was a mind-blowing bit of comics joy, so I can only imagine what the Christmas special is going to be like. According to the solicits, the four weird-headed bastards are searching for the true meaning of Christmas, leprosy, and friendship, so its gotta be good. There are some awesome looking Punks shirts with the Summer Special cover on ‘em for sale too, but they aren’t big enough for me, so I have to pass. page 284

Updates…

Hey Gang,This week sees the release of Cyblade: Pilot Season #1.  The book has art by Rick Mays, and is a complete reinvention of the character.  It's also a part of a competition to get me a job writing an ongoing.  I'm competing against some really great talent, so please do your part to help me trounce them.  It'll be available at finer comic retailers tomorrow.  More information on that here: http://www.topcow.com

Also, I'll be appearing with my Punks co-hort Kody tomorrow on Fanboy Radio to discuss Punks and whatever else we have coming down the pipe, so please, take the hour to listen to it live (and maybe even call in, if you can... I'm not sure) here at: http://www.fanboyradio.com .  Also, you can grab onto a podcast version of the interview shortly thereafter.  Coincidentally, the Punks store with T-Shirts, the limited edition version of the Summer Special, etc. should be live in the next day or two.  That's here: http://www.punksthecomic.com

And finally, don't forget about a week from Saturday when I'll be hosting The Future of Graphic Literature at the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library in Downtown, Los Angeles.  The panel will feature Mark Waid, Kazu Kibuishi, Ross Richie, Christos Gage, Tony Fleecs, and myself.  There'll be a small meet and greet right afterwards.  It's being held on Saturday September 29th at 2pm, more information here: http://events.lapl.org/viewEvent.cfm?eventID=9694 .  If you haven't  been to the Central Library, you're missing one of the Los Angeles' premiere pieces of architecture, and the revitilization of downtown has made the city come alive again, which, in other words, means you don't have to worry about getting mugged anymore.

Thanks for reading, and hope y'all check out my wares,

j.

PUNKS THE COMIC: SUMMER SPECIAL #1 Writer: Joshua Fialkov Artist: Kody Chamberlain Publisher: Digital Webbing Reviewed by Humphrey LeePUNKS THE COMIC is what would happen if NEXTWAVE was actually a Sunday night cartoon on Adult Swim. That is to say, it's awesome. Just awesome. PUNKS features such characters as a humanoid body with a fist for a head that uses signs to talk, a character named Dog that has a bulldog face (well duh!), and Abe Lincoln. Yes, Abe Lincoln. And Abe Lincoln is the best new character of the year, yes he is.

Now, what's this book about, you're asking, with its cast of crazy characters and dead historical figures? Fucked if I know and shame on you for asking! Come on, does any of that sound like there's some sort of coherent storyline going on? Of course not, but just like any (good) episode of, say, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”, it doesn't have to make sense, it just has to be hilarious. And PUNKS is all sorts of hilarious. Between Morrissey cracks, ethnic stereotypes, alien invaders in a station wagon, and a mid-issue "interview" with Rick Remender Out of Fucking Nowhere! this comic cannot help but be hilarious just like a midget in leather chaps couldn't help but be the same.

As if the comic itself couldn't be crazy enough, the "clip art" that Kody Chamerlain uses here in PUNKS helps enhance the oddball experience. What I mean by "clip art" is that PUNKS uses panels made up by actually cut out pictures arranged to make all the characters, settings, etc. Very unique and unusual, but very creative and entertaining as well which is pretty much exactly how this book should be described.

PUNKS is crazier than Britney Spears with a heroin needle and a Cabbage Patch doll, but ever the moreso entertaining. The sooner we get more of this the better, unlike the aforementioned Ms. Spears. I'm not sure you could find a better deal out there for just $5 right now...well, okay, except for maybe Britney Spears...sorry, had to do it. Cheers...

JOSHUA HALE FIALKOV ON PILOT SEASON: CYBLADE - NEWSARAMA

I'll tell you, for the first time in my career, I feel like I've truly arrived as a comic book writer. Sure, in my career up till today, I've been nominated for several awards, had books published by Random House, received checks for Work for Hire for Marvel and DC. I've even been given an ongoing series featuring a character who's over 40 years old and given free reign to develop her as I see fit. I've been called one of the best young writer's in comics, and given top marks by Entertainment Weekly, Variety, Wizard Magazine, USA Today, and virtually every other publication.

But, still, it wasn't real to me, until today.

Today I got my very first Newsarama thread attached to an interview filled with people who seem to want me dead.

http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=128997

I'm a real comic book writer now.

I'm going to call my mom and tell her.

Punks the Comic Summer SpecialAdan: What the fuck?

So there’s a dog-man, a Ghost Rider look-alike, a dude with a fist for a head, and Abraham Lincoln, and they all live in an apartment together while fighting off alien invasions and eating dead hookers. So, again, I ask: what the fuck?

This is too absurdist for me. I like Kody Chamberlain’s collage-style art, but even that gets really weird sometimes. Throw in the fact the comic is interrupted a few times by things like the thirteenth page missing, an interview with Rick Remender the fish, and an alien invasions PSA, and this thing is just too damn weird. Fans of The Young Ones will probably enjoy the hell out of this.
